About the Project

EPAI (Smart Personal Learning Environments) is a project funded under the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education programme, involving eleven universities from Europe and Latin America.

Its purpose has been to contribute to more personalised, inclusive and accessible higher education through the development of an intelligent ecosystem of services for the management, assessment and improvement of Personal Learning Environments (PLEs).

EPAI aims to strengthen students’ ability to organise and manage their own learning and to provide teaching staff and institutions with tools that support accessibility, digital inclusion, the ethical use of data, and evidence-based pedagogical decision-making.

To achieve this, the project has combined pedagogical research, technological development, training and international cooperation around four main objectives:

  • Develop a framework for the assessment and improvement of Personal Learning Environments.
  • Design an intelligent ecosystem integrating services for monitoring, recommendation and recognition of learning.
  • Strengthen institutional capacities through training and international cooperation.
  • Promote accessibility, ethics and inclusion in higher education.

Project Results

EPAI has developed an integrated set of tools, methodologies, training resources and digital services aimed at improving Personal Learning Environments and fostering learner autonomy.

Key project results include instruments for the assessment and improvement of PLEs, intelligent services for monitoring and recommending educational resources, mechanisms for recognising learning through verifiable credentials, and training activities for students, teaching staff and university administrators.

The project incorporates the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), accessibility criteria and ethical guidelines to help ensure that educational technologies respond to individuals’ needs and preferences.

Beyond technological development, EPAI provides pedagogical, organisational and technological foundations to support the transformation of higher education institutions towards more flexible, inclusive and student-centred educational models.

The project results, publications and resources are available on the official EPAI website.
